Exercise and Hypertension

Do you like that chair you are sitting in? I know you are sitting in a chair in front of a computer, or you wouldn't be reading this. Sitting isn't a problem -- unless you do too much of it. It is a proven fact that exercise can lower blood pressure. I am not making that up.

The KIND of exercise that you choose to participate in isn't much of a factor either….ANY exercise is GOOD exercise. That doesn't mean that you should jump out of your chair right now and do some really strenuous exercise until you pass out. That would be just as bad as no exercise.

To build up to a sufficient amount of daily exercise, you first need to check with your doctor to be sure that it is safe for you to exercise. If he or she gives you the okay, then you need to start slow.

You aren't going to overcome years of a sedentary lifestyle in a matter of days, or even weeks. If you try to start at the top, you are going to hit bottom (or the floor) pretty quick. Make endurance exercises the core of your exercise program.

What is meant by endurance exercises? Endurance exercises are exercises that you do for a period of time before your muscles become tired, such as walking, swimming, cycling, and low-impact aerobics. You need to avoid such things as aerobics and running. You might can add those things later, but you don't need to start with them.

As you progress, the next thing to add to your endurance exercise is low-resistance, high-repetition weight training. Remember not to hold your breath when you are lifting weights because that can cause great blood pressure fluctuations that are counterproductive.

Exercise can lower blood pressure, but it needs to be "smart" exercise!
