Herbal treatments as a viable alternative to synthetic drug therapy for high blood pressure are being scrutinized more closely today than ever before. High blood pressure, or hypertension, is a lifelong problem that requires lifetime treatment. Hypertension isn't likely to just "go away." Most of the herbs used to treat high blood pressure have a diuretic effect. Hawthorn, nutmeg, kelp, and cardamom are all herbs that are used to treat high blood pressure. There are also Indian herbs that are used to treat hypertension, like arjuna, jalamamsi, shankhapushpi, and manjishta.

A diet that is centered on fresh fruit and fresh vegetables and that is loaded with whole grains is also considered part of the herbal treatments for high blood pressure.  High blood pressure that is being treated with herbal medicine will also require a low-salt diet.
