High Blood Pressure Medications
Fortunately for those of us who have high blood pressure, or hypertension, our doctors have medications that they can prescribe to us to lower our blood pressure. We should all be grateful that these medications are available to us and grateful to our doctors who can prescribe them for us, because high blood pressure can be deadly. High blood pressure can cause heart attacks, heart failure, strokes, kidney failure, and a host of other problems.
No matter which of the many medications available that a doctor prescribes, it is of the utmost importance that patients take the medication exactly as it is prescribed. It should be taken at about the same time every single day and high blood pressure should never be suddenly stopped. That creates a whole other set of problems.
Some medications that our doctors can prescribe for our high blood pressure are:
1. Diuretics: Diuretics rid the body of excess fluids and excess sodium. This is the first line of defense against high blood pressure, because excess fluid retention and excess sodium are the biggest problems we have in controlling high blood pressure.
2. Beta-blockers: Beta-blockers work to slow the heart rate and thus lower the blood pressure by reducing the volume of the blood output.
3. Sympathetic Nerve Inhibitors: There are sympathetic nerves that go from the brain to all parts of the body, including the arteries. The sympathetic nerves can cause a rise in blood pressure by constricting the arteries. Sympathetic nerve inhibitors reduce blood pressure by preventing these nerves from constricting blood vessels.
4. Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme (ACE) Inhibitors: ACE inhibitors interfere with the body's production of angiotensin. Angiotensin is a chemical that causes the arteries to constrict.
There are other classes of drugs that our doctors have access to, but these are the main four that are most often prescribed to treat high blood pressure.
