The Causes of High Blood Pressure
Medical science cannot provide us with one definitive cause of elevated blood pressure. About 95% of people who have been diagnosed with high blood pressure do not know exactly what caused their blood pressure to be high. There are several medical conditions that can sometimes cause high blood pressure, such as kidney abnormality, birth defects, and narrowing of certain arteries. But these conditions do not always cause an increase in blood pressure.
While the medical profession cannot tell us for sure what causes high blood pressure, they can tell us what we can do to lower blood pressure.
1. The first thing that your doctor is likely to tell you when he discovers that your blood pressure is too high is to stop smoking if you are a smoker. It is true that nicotine can raise blood pressure, and stopping smoking can help to reduce blood pressure, so it is good advice. Stopping smoking can lower blood pressure, but smoking is not the cause of high blood pressure. (Everybody who smokes doesn't have high blood pressure.)
2. The second thing your doctor is likely to tell you when he discovers that your blood pressure is too high is to lose weight if you are overweight. Losing even 10 pounds can lower blood pressure. Losing weight can lower blood pressure, but it is not the cause of high blood pressure. (Everybody who is overweight doesn't have high blood pressure.)
3. The third thing that your doctor is likely to tell you when he discovers that your blood pressure is too high is to increase your exercise. Even adding 10 minutes of aerobic exercise per day will lower blood pressure. Adding exercise will lower blood pressure, but lack of exercise is not the cause of high blood pressure. (Everybody that is sedentary does not have high blood pressure.)
Take your doctor's advice if you have high blood pressure: Quit smoking, lost weight, and exercise.
